how do we listen to Objective Atmosphere
how do we listen to Objective Atmosphere
“Atmosphere is one of [the actor’s] strongest means of expression, as well as an unbreakable link between them and their audiences…Atmospheres for the artist are comparable to the different keys in music. They are a concrete means of expression. The performer must listen to them as [they] listen to music.”
-Michael Chekhov, On the Technique of Acting
“Although human beings can contribute to, and can create an Atmosphere, it does appear to have a life outside of us and an affect upon us…
What has no soul cannot create soul.”
-Dawn Langman, The Art of Acting: Body - Soul - Spirit - Word
WHAT ARE WE EXPLORING?
Chekhov calls Atmosphere “the soul of the space.” Every space has one. It works on us and through us. How do we listen to Atmosphere? How do we create it?
Atmosphere is an intangible substance the actors and audience experience in reciprocity with each other. We breathe it. We experience it together, and allow that experience — that exchange between us — to move us into the unknown. Atmosphere is an inexhaustible fount that gives inspiration when we yield to it. How do we yield to and embody Atmospheres? How does it deepen our union with our text? Our relationship with space, our ensemble, our audience?
I’ve explored the process we’re about to embark on in my own work. We’ll use music to experience Atmosphere as a living, breathing, independent being that inspires and unites us. This ability to contact and sustain Atmosphere is uniquely human, incapable of being replicated by technology. We’ll then venture into the other “Whats” that Atmosphere can be, time permitting.
Our work will be experiential, improvisational, and ensemble-based.
What happens when we’re inspired by the soul of the space?
WHEN DO WE EXPLORE?
Saturdays, September 20-October 11, 10-11:30am Eastern Time. That’s:
September 20
September 27
October 4
October 11
Please be available for all four dates above when you register. Each class builds on the one before it.
Our work in the class space is private and personal. You’re encouraged to take risks! So, classes will not be recorded, just as they would not be if we worked together in person.
WHERE DO WE EXPLORE?
Zoom. You will be sent a link and details the day prior to our first meeting. Please reach out at least a day before our first meeting if you need technical assistance with Zoom.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This exploration is for artists ages 18 and up interested in expanding their psychophysical practice, imaginative capacities, and embodying that imagination with ease and a sense of play; for the artist curious about what is true for them in this moment rather than what might be perceived as “right” or “wrong.” Participants may be from anywhere in the world since this is online only. Classes are given in English.
THAT'S ME! HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?

•Please have water, a notebook, and writing implements handy.
•Dress comfortably for movement.
•Set up your Zoom camera in a decently lit, quiet space where you have room to make full-bodied movements.
•Please turn off the outside world and silence any devices.
WHAT IS MY INVESTMENT?
$150. Please register by September 18th.
You may register and make payment on this page, or contact me to pay through Venmo or CashApp.
If your current financial situation precludes you from signing up at full price, or you need to tier your payments, please contact me and we’ll work to find what’s fair. Please do not justify your need to me. All I ask is that you’re honest with what you’re able to afford. I, too, received assistance for my training along the way, and I’d like to give that back if and when the need is true.
WHAT’S THE REFUND POLICY:
You will receive a full refund in the event that I must cancel the class. At least three participants are needed for the class to proceed.
You will receive a refund of your payment amount less any processing fees if you cancel prior to September 18th.
