The Turing Machine

This weekend only, Theater Ninjas presents The Turing Machine, an original 'post-human metaphysical biography' about the life and legacy of Alan Turing: the brilliant pioneer of computer sciences.

In this one-man (that would be me!) show, a computer program believes it is the reincarnation of Turing and relives the complex contradictions of this singular genius's life, reflecting on his career, persecution, and influence on the modern age.

I co-wrote and star in this show, co-written and directed by Theater Ninjas Artistic Director, Jeremy Paul.

It's a tremendous honor to bring Alan Turing and his legacy to the stage, and to perform so many of the words that he wrote, himself. This is my first full solo piece! Feeling happy and grateful.

Theater Ninjas is the Food Truck of Cleveland Theater. We’re a nomadic company who seeks out new and exciting spaces to perform. Working in non-traditional venues gives us an opportunity to reimagine how and why we tell stories, and helps us to create deep, fascinating worlds for the audience to explore. We’re always experimenting; always rethinking what theater can be: as entertainment, as art and as out-of-the-ordinary experiences.

"So don’t tarry. If you’re in the mood for a fascinating trip that will have you laughing out loud multiple times, get a zesty taste of gender and sexual transience in TingleTangle."
- Christine Howey, Cleveland Scene and Rave and Pan

“Presented in the creative context of a decadent Weimar-era cabaret – with its naughty period song list, bawdy humor and displays of nudity and sexuality – TingleTangle boils down to an intriguing personal journey with creator and featured performer Ray Caspio. It is a journey worth taking.“
- Bob Abelman, Cleveland Jewish News

"Ray Caspio...once again proves he is definitely an actor who is willing to take creative chances. ...intensely honest and unflinching...humorous, heartbreaking, and in many ways, heroic."
- Land of Cleve

"Ray Caspio...identifying pivotal moments in his sexuality that are painful, explosive, and heartwarming...opens his heart and his soul on this personal journey...Whether delivering slices of his life in dialogue or singing his emotional journey, the path of his sexual life is honest, beautiful, shocking, and inspiring. You have one more weekend of performances to go underground to reach your destination. You will come back up with a challenge to free yourself to be who you are."

June 1, 2002, I sat next to my grandma in the balcony at the Beacon Theatre in New York City and witnessed Liza Minnelli perform her "comeback" concert, Liza's Back. Liza was a performer who was fully alive, conversing with her audience, and living in the present moment: flaws and all. I set a goal for myself that night.

Today, TingleTangle: the show I conceived and am performing in.
Sexuality, gender, marriage equality.
Sexy, hysterical, thought-provoking.

The Sound of Applause: NPR/WCPN 90.3 Ideastream interview with Dee Perry

Theater Ninjas' TingleTangle is an evening of personal storytelling, gender-bending songs and no-punches pulled conversations about sexuality, gender, oppression, hate speech and compassion's transgressive power. An avant garde Muppet Show mixed with Weimar sex and danger. This cabaret-inspired performance responds to a conflicted, changing world, with love, empathy, humor and the desire to understand…not to mention some out-and-out desire!

TingleTangle revels in the nuances of identity and how we all use performance to communicate our truest selves to the world. Forming TingleTangle’s core are monologues and songs by me, drawing on my experiences as a married gay man dealing with prejudice, identity, and acceptance. I am honored to work with a talented, generous ensemble of actors who perform original comedy sketches and interactive stories, with composition and live accompaniment by Eric M. C. Gonzalez.

His monologue towards the end of the play is a gift."
